JJ Levine "Alone Time"
Canadian photographer JJ Levine attempts to reveal the superficial nature of gendered appearance. For the Montreal-based artist’s photographic series Alone Time, Levine asked friends to pose as both men and women for each photograph, therefore showing how malleable and subject-to-change gender can be. "Gender is nuanced and can exist in multiple forms within any given person," Levine argues. "I'd like to move away from the gender binary, and I think my images suggest that could be a reality."

We discussed that we grew up with a lot of gender stereotypes and because of that gender stereotypes exist passively in our minds. So we wanted to work with it and create something interactive, that would make people identify gender stereotypes and examine the effects of it and also explore how progress could been made.
We decided to focus on the gender stereotypes in our everyday life objects.
Pastel colours – pink, a classic one! -, curving, sinuous, ergonomic and delicate lines are often used for female products. Dark, cold or metallic colours and sharp-cornered objects for male.
As for our final project idea, we decided to make an experiment. Each of us brought a few objects and put them together in a box. We asked our classmates to classify the objects to more feminine or masculine based on the gender norms that they grew up with.
It was very interesting to hear what the classmates had to say about yhe topic of gender stereotypes. I think this interactive experiment opened an interesting disscussion and that was one of our goals.
